Joel Silver, who has produced such recent movies as Sherlock Holmes, Speed Racer and V for Vendetta, spoke recently to the Los Angeles Times and revealed that Sgt. Rock has found new life at Warner Brothers.
Additionally, Silver went on to say, “It’s a little bit in the future, as a war movie. It’s not going to be ‘where it’s been,’ it’s going to be ‘where it’s going.’ We didn’t want to do Iraq; we didn’t want to do a contemporary war. We wanted to do a sort of futuristic war. It’s pretty strong. Chad St. John wrote the script, and we’ve got Francis Lawrence involved in developing it with us. It’s not a ‘go’ movie yet but I’m feeling good about it.”
Upon hearing this we must admit we are a little confused. Sgt. Rock has always been represented as the non-commissioned officer leading Easy Company during World War II. Call me a sucker for that period of world history but I just can’t understand the need for the drastic re-envisioning of the character. If the character is going to be put into a future timeline, why even call it “Sgt. Rock?” Will this drastic time shift breathe new life into the character or just leave die-hard fans scratching their heads and wondering? Hopefully, development will continue moving forward and we will find out.
